Didgeridoo Down Under is a unique, cross-curricular program that combines Australian music, culture, science, literacy development, comedy, character building, anti-bullying and audience participation.  The featured musical instrument is the mesmerizing didgeridoo -- typically a hollow tree trunk -- which has been played by Aboriginal Australians for at least 1,500 years.  But DDU is much more than music. It's interactive, educational, motivational and highly entertaining, a one-of-a-kind "edu-tainment" experience for all ages!

7 Broward achievers net $2,500 scholarships
Seven outstanding Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) seniors were named National Achievement Scholarship winners and will receive a $2,500 scholarship for their undergraduate studies.

Autistic students take flight in pilot program
A month ago, Ruth Goldman couldn't imagine taking her twins to the airport to board a plane. Her 11-year-old sons have autism and don't react well to unfamiliar sights and sounds. "It just wasn't even on the list," said Goldman, of Miramar. But this week, the two Silver LakesElementary students sat quietly aboard a JetBlue airplane at FortLauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, amused by the small TV screens attached to the back of the seats.

Airline, TSA, FLL partner to better serve children with special needs
JetBlue took 15 children with autism on a special flight to learn how to better serve kids with special needs. For the Silver Lakes Elementary School students and their parents, every step of the air travel experience was simulated on Wednesday for the airlines Wings for Autism program.

Western High School seniors heading to prom stopped to help the victims of a rollover crash on Interstate 595. The crash happened about 6:43 p.m. Saturday. Limousine driver Danny Izzi had picked up the 20 students and was taking them to a beach hotel when he saw the Honda Odyssey flip over right in front of him.

Broward school district won't eliminate zero as a grade
The Broward School Board rejected a proposal to make 50 the lowest score a student could earn, after it drew overwhelming opposition Tuesday. Parents and teachers said eliminating scores of zero through 49 was unfair because students who try but fail would earn the same score as those who turn nothing in. They said simply adjusting grades would not help struggling students and ultimately send the wrong message.

Sam Reich has had his eyes on the sky since he was seven, when he assembled his first hobby store rocket….Four teams from Plantation High School and a group from Western High School in Davie are among 100 national finalists facing off on Saturday morning in The Plains, Va., for a share of $60,000 in scholarship money and spots in more advanced contests. “That’s what it’s all about,” said Joe Vallone, a Plantation aerospace engineering teacher and Team America Rocketry Challenge mentor.

The musical journey for 25 BrowardCounty students ended a few songs earlier than expected Sunday night. Students from the Dillard Center for the Arts in FortLauderdale traveled to New YorkCity's Jazz at LincolnCenter but fell short of earning a spot as one of the top three bands.

Teenager critically injured after being run over by Broward County Transit bus
A teen boy was severely injured in Pompano Beach Friday morning after the Broward County Transit bus he tried to catch to school ran him over….CBS 4 reported that the teen attends Crystal Lake Middle School, and that he was stabilized at Broward Health North and airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center for further treatment.

Broward ready to convert failing schools
It's official: The Broward school district will overhaul five schools next year – closing some and repurposing others – in what officials call a holistic approach to helping 2,000 students in primarily low-income communities. "We tend to focus so much on academic outcomes at the exclusion of addressing the social and emotional needs of our children," said Superintendent Robert Runcie. "We're trying to put in an educational community model."

Weston school PTA shut down after audit
A Weston parent group was shut down Friday after a district audit found some of its volunteer members paid themselves a total of $9,000 last year. The Parent-Teacher Association at Manatee BayElementary was ordered to cease all operations immediately by the BrowardCounty Council of PTAs, which oversees local parent groups.

CODE RED DRILL

On Friday, May 3, 2013, parents received a parent link notifying you Tamarac Elementary was preforming our Code Red Drill. As Deputy French and our principal Mrs. Ray walked around the school they said it was like a Saturday morning with no one here. Students and staff were so quiet we could hear a pin drop. Parents we urge you to speak to your child, explain the important of what to do during a code red drill. Character education program honors 29 Broward students
Seniors Brooke Denton and Andres Badel and fourth-grader Gavin Ostrow reach out relentlessly to challenged or needy students. The three inspire others as they do. Denton, 18,of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, focuses on her special Best Buddies every day, socializing with them at school or calling and texting them. She is zealous about building community and statewide awareness of Best Buddies and putting together disability awareness training.

Breakfast forum addresses educational challenges facing Broward County students
The plight of America’s youth enrolled in public schools across the country has become increasingly a cause for concern. Statistics which compare the academic achievement of Black and brown students to their white counterparts show a negative disparity among African American and Hispanic students. This education phenomenon has existed for years and now has reached a point where it is not only being voiced by education professionals, but resonated all the way to our nation’s Oval Office.

A Science Fair to Remember

President Barack Obama rode a bicycle at the White House Science Fair on April 22. But it wasn’t an ordinary bike. As he pedaled, the President stayed in place, while the energy from his pedaling powered a water filtration system. He was testing an invention created by a team of 14 students from Northeast High School, in Oakland Park, Florida.

Teacher raises may kick in this year – not 2014
Florida’s teachers could get raises as soon as this summer under a revised budget agreement state lawmakers hammered out Wednesday…Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie said it’s a good thing the raises can be given sooner, but he warned teachers not to expect the $2,500 and $3,500 raises being mentioned inTallahassee. “The dollars aren’t going to meet the expectations that have been set,” Runcie said. Besides the other instructional employees the Legislature added into the mix, Runcie said he still doesn’t know if raises for charter school teachers will also have to come out of the $47 million the district expects to receive. “The turkey at the table is only one size,” Runcie said.“The more people come, the less you’re going to get.”

Florida public online school gets small budget increase
School districts, teachers and parents are celebrating the $1 billion addition to the state’s education budget. But not everyone is happy with their slice of the pie. Florida Virtual School, the state’s public online school, says it will actually come up about $26 million short due to a proposed change in the state’s education finance formula.

New BCPS Process for Grades 6 or 9 for the 2013/14 School Year: Re-Registration Required

Yesterday, the Legislature issued its Final Budget Conference Report. We appreciate that the Legislature provides more than $1 billion for K-12 education in the State of Florida. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) share of the increase is approximately $93 million, as claimed by the Legislature.

Legislature looks to speed release of school employee raises
Florida lawmakers are looking to speed up the release of $480 million in school employee raises one day after the House and Senate negotiated a budget that proposed delaying them until June 2014…Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie, however, said earmarks from the state tied up most the new money. And when coupled with increased costs for pensions and healthcare, they would leave Broward schools with a general fund deficit. “This is an interesting game, as I see it, that’s being played,” Runcie said, and called on Scott to veto the Legislature’s conforming bill. “In some ways, I kind of liken it to a shell game.”

Teachers Pay Raise Bill Criticized
A bill to give Florida teachers a pay increase is getting mixed reviews. Gov. Rick Scott congratulated legislators, but United Teachers of Dade official Karla Hernandez-Mats feels let down by them. Miami-Dade and Broward's superintendents of schools, Alberto Carvalho and Robert Runcie, said they were appalled by the plan.

Local environmental education earns 'green ribbon'
It pays off to go green.
The school district of Palm Beach County and Driftwood Middle School in Hollywood were nationally recognized this week for reducing their carbon footprint and promoting environmental education. Driftwood was one of two schools in the state to receive the "green ribbon" given annually to schools and districts by the U.S. Department of Education. Palm Beach County was the only county awarded in Florida. A special recognition ceremony will take place June 3 in Washington, D.C.

FL high schools get top honors in U.S. ranking
Study bases top schools on state proficiency and college prep
A number of Florida schools have made the list of Best High Schools according to a tally by U.S.News & World Report. More than 21,000 public high schools were evaluated in 49 states and the District of Columbia based on state proficiency standards and how well they prepare students for college.

Could 50 be the new zero for Broward schools?
The Broward school district is proposing eliminating the grade of zero and making 50 the lowest score a student could earn as a way to motivate failing students. But the proposed change has irked parents who say it's simply not fair.

Clarifying recent rumors, Superintendent Robert Runcie said Tuesday there had been no commitment or determination to move district staff into Sunset school that is slated to close next year. He said the primary focus is on transitioning the special needs students at the K-12 center before the district begins soliciting proposals from the community.

4 local high schools ranked in state Top 20
Two schools in Broward and two in Palm Beach County are ranked among the top 20 in the state, according to a report released by U.S. News & World Report on Tuesday.

Dade high schools named among country’s top 100
Several South Florida schools have again been ranked among the best in Florida and the country by the online magazine U.S. News & World Report. Altogether, Miami-Dade and Broward Schools occupied 10 of the top 20 high schools in Florida.

Northeast High science students have Obama pedaling for clean water
The road to the White House isn’t easy — even if you do happen to have an amazing water-purifying bicycle. But thanks to the hard work of many at Northeast High School, and the support of community businesses ranging from a car dealership to a bagel shop, two students from the Oakland Park school became science celebrities this week. Not only did Kiona Elliott and Payton Kaar appear at the annual White House Science Fair, but their invention — inspired by unsanitary water conditions in Haiti — was a highlight of national media coverage after President Obama accepted their bold invitation to actually hop aboard and start pedaling.

School board buys new building for workforce training
McFatter Technical Center in Davie is about to get bigger after the School Board Tuesday approved spending $2.4 million for a neighboring building from the Boys & Girls Club. The 18,000-square-foot building, which is not currently in use, will expand programs that focus on business education and information technology.

Davie voters approve charter changes, vote no on paying for school resource officers
Residents said they don't want to increase taxes to place a school resource officer in all of the town's schools, according to election results announced Tuesday.

Foundation to award almost 200 scholarships to Broward seniors
The Broward Education Foundation will be giving out nearly 200 scholarships to Broward high school graduates this year with unmet financial need. The scholarships will range from $900 to four-year, 120-credit hour Florida Prepaid tuition-only scholarships.

School Recognition funds database
The Florida Department of Educationis doling out about $35 million nearly 400 schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties to fund temporary hires and equipment or to be paid out as bonuses.The awards are part of the state’s School Recognition Program, established by the Florida Legislature in 1997 to reward high-performing schools. Money awarded by the program goes to schools that received an “A” on the state’s grading formula, improved by a letter grade, or maintained a grade after improving by two letter grades the previous year.

Broward School District may combine schools
In an effort to better serve students and become more efficient in the operation of the District’s six special day schools (also referred to as center sites), the District reviewed the academic trends, educational programming and student enrollment at each of the center sites. The six center sites are Bright Horizons School, Cross Creek School, The Quest Center, Sunset School, Whispering Pines Center and Wingate Oaks Center.

Broward faces $1.3 million class size fine
Broward County Public Schools will likely have to pay $1.3 million in fines, the second highest in the state, for having too many classes that exceed state-mandated caps. Broward's loss could be Palm Beach County's gain after its district met all state class size requirements for the second year in a row. As a result, it will split $5.7 million in state fines with other districts that met the requirements.

On April 13, West Broward High in Pembroke Pines is hosting its annual DiaBEAT This! Fundraiser to benefit the American Diabetes Association. Performing will be Miami Heat dancers and area school drum lines, cheering squads and dance teams.

Miami-Dade braces for lower school grades amid tougher standards
Students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties are more than a week away from sitting down to take the FCAT 2.0 and kicking off a battery of standardized tests and end-of-year exams. But some South Florida schools officials are already talking about the results….In Broward County, Superintendent Robert Runcie said this week that the state changing its formula has become an “annual ritual.” But he said the potential impacts in July, when elementary and middle school grades are released, is not something he has studied in detail.

PB parents question decision to double-test students
Parents in Palm Beach County say middle school students taking advanced course work are being unfairly subjected to double testing. The state no longer requires middle school students taking high school level math classes such as Algebra I and Geometry to take their grade level FCAT. That's because they already have to take end-of-course exams to get credit for the more advanced class….On the other hand, Broward schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said the district "felt it was not instructionally appropriate to require students to move away from the content being taught [in Algebra/Geometry] to prepare and take the grade level Math FCAT."

School bus driver in trouble over phone says she lied - call was not from son in Iraq
It was a compelling human-interest story that created a national buzz: Broward school bus driver Rossana Lucas faced a potential five-day suspension for answering her cellphone while driving. Special-needs school closing despite parents' pleas
A last-ditch appeal by parents to save their school from closure failed Tuesday when the School Board unanimously approved shutting down the special-needs center in FortLauderdale. Sunset School will close at the end of the year and send its more than 100 students to Cross Creek in PompanoBeach or Whispering Pines in Miramar. Both are also special-needs facilities that serve K-12 students.

Laptops stolen from North Side Elementary in Fort Lauderdale
More than a dozen laptop computers were stolen from a FortLauderdale elementary school during a burglary that occurred sometime after school let out, officials said. The principal at NorthSide Elementary arrived at the school about 7 a.m Tuesday and discovered that a cart carrying 16 laptops was missing, said Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman Detective DeAnna Greenlaw.

More than 4,000 Palm Beach County middle-schoolers taking advanced math classes will get a double dose of standardized testing in the coming weeks, if the school district has its way…It’s unclear which other school districts have made decisions similar to Palm Beach County Broward County Public Schools is not requiring its middle-schoolers in these advanced math classes to also take the FCAT, but Orange County Public Schools is.
