Nova High School Teacher Shawna Morgan wins 2013 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Economics
The Florida Council on Economic Education (FCEE) named the 2013 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Economics (GAP) winners, today, May 10, 2013. Educators from all grade levels in all 67 school districts submitted lesson plans and curriculum to compete for top honors on Friday May 3, 2013 at Lake Ashton Golf Club in Lake Wales, Florida.

Broward students rocket to Capitol Hill in aerospace competition
Sam Reich has had his eyes on the sky since he was seven, when he assembled his first hobby store rocket….Four teams from Plantation High School and a group from Western High School in Davie are among 100 national finalists facing off on Saturday morning in The Plains, Va., for a share of $60,000 in scholarship money and spots in more advanced contests. “That’s what it’s all about,” said Joe Vallone, a Plantation aerospace engineering teacher and Team America Rocketry Challenge mentor.

Broward County theater students pumped for Cappies awards
The TonyAwards have arrived, except the winners are none other than South Florida’s very own high school thespians. Excitement builds and muscles tense every year as aspiring actors, singers, dancers, techies and critics come together on one night to watch, recognize and celebrate exceptional high school theatrical productions. On May 21, hundreds of students will come together for the annual South Florida Cappies Gala.

What does South Florida nature look like? For 12-year-old Jordan Hessler, it's a canvas of clouds, the sun, palm trees and a bobbing boat. His vision is emblazoned on tote bags now for sale at WholeFoods Market in CoralSprings. The boy won a contest in which 20 local children expressed their interpretation of South Florida nature through art. "I am very excited and proud,'' said Jordan,of Tamarac, where he attends Millennium Middle School. "It think it's really cool."

Dillard falls short of top three at NYC jazz competition
The musical journey for 25 BrowardCounty students ended a few songs earlier than expected Sunday night. Students from the Dillard Center for the Arts in FortLauderdale traveled to New YorkCity's Jazz at LincolnCenter but fell short of earning a spot as one of the top three bands.

Teenager critically injured after being run over by Broward County Transit bus
A teen boy was severely injured in Pompano Beach Friday morning after the Broward County Transit bus he tried to catch to school ran him over….CBS 4 reported that the teen attends Crystal Lake Middle School, and that he was stabilized at Broward Health North and airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center for further treatment.

Broward ready to convert failing schools
It's official: The Broward school district will overhaul five schools next year – closing some and repurposing others – in what officials call a holistic approach to helping 2,000 students in primarily low-income communities. "We tend to focus so much on academic outcomes at the exclusion of addressing the social and emotional needs of our children," said Superintendent Robert Runcie. "We're trying to put in an educational community model."

Weston school PTA shut down after audit
A Weston parent group was shut down Friday after a district audit found some of its volunteer members paid themselves a total of $9,000 last year. The Parent-Teacher Association at Manatee BayElementary was ordered to cease all operations immediately by the BrowardCounty Council of PTAs, which oversees local parent groups.
