Broward middle school students take part in 4-H science day
Eco-friendly robots, or Eco-Bots, will be the focus of the annual 4-H National Youth Science Day, which takes place Wednesday.
Sponsored by 4-H, the event puts middle school students into scientists’ shoes for a day. This year, students will develop Eco-Bots programmed to clean up a simulated environmental spill, learning robotic engineering concepts along the way.

U.S. Department of Education Awards the Teacher Incentive Fund: BCPS Wins $48.5 Million Grant to Reward Effective Teachers and Principals
Broward County Public Schools was awarded $48.5 million over a five-year period by the U.S. Department of Education to recognize and reward effective teachers and principals.  The 2012 Teacher Incentive Fund grants will pay for increased salaries and training for educators who work in high-need schools. BCPS is one of only six winning school districts in Florida and 35 districts nationwide from a pool of over 120 applicants.

Broward School District making progress toward reducing class size
Wary of being slapped with another $66 million fine for violating class-size requirements, the Broward School District said it was making substantial progress toward compliance this year.  School officials said 84 percent of all class periods meet the state's class-size requirements so far — compared with 54 percent last year. They also said 80 percent of the classes not in compliance are only over by one or two students. "We're absolutely moving forward to get on record," Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said.

Students honored as part of anti-bullying contest
Hollywood, Hallandale students honored as part of anti-bullying contest
South Broward High School students were recently honored for winning an anti-bullying contest sponsored by the school district and the United Way of Broward County.  The Hollywood school's contest entry logo for "Dare to Care" was selected, and they produced a video focusing on the effects of cyberbullying.  "The pride that they feel is immeasurable," said teacher Ellen D. Hochhauser, whose students won the contest. "The kids put a lot of time and effort into this."

20,000 students in Broward read for the record
More than 20,000 students in Broward County joined millions of kids nationwide Thursday in an attempt to break the world record for reading the same book on the same day.  Every kindergarten and pre-K class in the district participated in Jumpstart's Read for the Record campaign, which aims to promote literacy and early childhood education.

Embattled Broward school bus chief still quietly at work
A month ago, it looked as if Broward County's embattled school transportation director was on his way out.
But Chester Tindall has been working at school district headquarters, despite announcing Sept. 5 in the midst of a school bus crisis that he was about to take a six-to-eight-week medical leave and then work with district administrators to transition out of the job.  Though Tindall is still working, his day-to-day management duties are being handled by district administrator Jeff Moquin, who was assigned the task by Superintendent Robert Runcie the day Tindall announced his leave.

Cooper City, Pines pioneers to be honored
A historic school will serve as the venue to honor 29 Broward residents, including ones from Pembroke Pines and Cooper City, as part of the county's 40th annual Pioneer Day. Since its inception, more than 2,300 residents have been added to the list as a Pioneer.

School buses still a problem
Three recent Sun Sentinel reports raise renewed concerns about the Broward County School District's transportation department, and prompt some Editorial Board concerns about the School Board.
