FAMILY CURRICULUM NIGHT: NOVEMBER 14, 2012

Tamarac Elementary is proud to present our annual Family Curriculum Night and dinner on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. 

“The Learning Raceway” is a fun and exciting evening in which Tamarac Elementary families come together to celebrate learning at all grade levels.  Every family is invited to attend.  This event is a Title 1 Public Meeting.

This family curriculum night will offer several sessions to parents and their children on a variety of topics:
·      Presentations and interactive sessions in a variety of subject areas
·      Information about what parents can do to assist their children academically

A delicious dinner will be provided free of charge to Tamarac Elementary School students and their immediate families.  In addition, parents will be able to receive their child’s first quarter report card at the conclusion of the event.

To assist us in planning for the event, please complete the bottom portion and return the form to school with your eldest child’s by Wednesday, October 31, 2012 to reserve your seat for the academic sessions and dinner.  Only one form per family needs to be returned.  An event schedule and dinner reservation will be provided after you have registered.

Congratulations to Omar from Mr. Novajosky's Class for being our TOP SELLER in our Fall Fundraiser. By selling 75 items Omar won an XBOX 360 with Kinect and a $50 gift card to Target. Great Job!

SAM'S CLUB REWARDS

Sam's Club of Coral Springs has chosen to reward the teachers of Tamarac Elementary School in their Sam's Club Teacher Reward program this year. On Friday the teachers and staff were provided a breakfast hosted by Sam's Club. Later 20 random teacher were drawn to each win a $50 gift card to Sam's Club to purchase items for their classroom. NEW RELEASE: OCTOBER 19, 2012

Grant boosts school's environmental efforts
A Weston school's environmental program has gotten a big boost. Country Isles Elementary School'sPTA recently received a $54,780 grant for its environmental education enrichment program from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. It was one of 68 to receive funding for service learning projects in the U.S. and Canada. The money will go toward a new science lab and a garden space for third-graders.

Nonprofit gets $100K to help high school students
The Firewall Centers in Davie is getting a big boost to its efforts. It recently received $100,000 for its high school outreach program from the AT&T Aspire High School Educational Foundation. The money will be used for the nonprofit's THINK (Take charge, Have a plan, Involve the right people, Never quit, Keep giving back) program over the next two years. The program helps students raise their grades and prepares them for college or a career….Indian Ridge Middle School Principal Frank Zagari said his students have improved with the help of Firewall Centers.

Students take part in e-field trip to 1800 election
Sebastian Rolando and his classmates recently got to experience parts of Colonial Williamsburg without ever leaving the library at their Pembroke Pines school. Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Pembroke Lakes Elementary School were part of a national electronic field trip hosted by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. As part of a live webcast, schools from California, Oklahoma, New Jersey and more watched actors perform dramatizations regarding the presidential election of 1800.

Mom protests Confederate flag at Sunset Lakes Elementary
A Miramar elementary school designed to showcase U.S. history is being criticized for its display of the Confederate flag. Sunset Lakes Elementary School in Miramar is not your typical school — opened 10 years ago with a “U.S.History” theme, just about every hallway is emblazoned with historical murals, artifacts, or flags.

EARLY RELEASE OCTOBER 25, 2012

REMINDER: Early Release is October 25, 2012 @ 1:00PM

RED RIBBON WEEK:

OCTOBER 22, 2012 to OCTOBER 25, 2012

Monday: Students are encouraged to wear boots to "STOMP OUT DRUGS"

Tuesday: Students are encouraged to wear their shirts backwards to "TURN OUR BACK ON DRUGS". Students will also be given a lollypop for being drug free.

Wednesday: Students are encouraged to wear RED. WE PLEDGE TO BE DRUG FREE. Students will also be given a red ribbon to wear this day.

Thursday:  Students are encouraged to wear mismatched socks, because "TIGERS SOCK~IT TO DRUGS" Students will also receive a sticker for keeping "PAWS OFF DRUGS"

Students Honored As Part Of Anti-Bullying Contest
South Broward High School students were recently honored for winning an anti-bullying contest sponsored by the school district and the United Way of Broward County. The Hollywood school's contest entry logo for "Dare to Care" was selected, and they produced a video focusing on the effects of cyberbullying.

Students Take Part In National Public Lands Day Project
The drive along a stretch of Griffin Road will be a bit greener with the additionof new flowers planted by volunteers from Cooper City and Davie…Students from Cooper City High School's SITE (Students Improving the Environment) club assembled 1,500 seed balls consisting of dried seed, clay and worm casings, which were added to a 100-foot stretch of ground on the Griffin Road side. When the seedballs are hit by rain, the clay will become wet and help germinate the seed while providing fertilizer.

Meeting Helps DefuseTension Over School Buses
Tensions between Fort Lauderdale High School and nearby neighbors seem on the way toward resolution following a meeting between the two sides last week.  The noisy meeting involved city officials, Broward County School Board officials and residents of the Middle River Terrace neighborhood. About 100 people gathered in an auditorium inside the school's main building recently to air grievances over noise and parking.

One For The Books: Community Leaders Honor Arts Excellence At 'Broward County Arts Teacher Of The Year'
Broward County will celebrate leaders in arts excellence on Oct. 24 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts for the 2012 "Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year" event.  An art exhibition will welcome guests at 5 p.m. and the winner will be announced during the presentation, which begins at 6 p.m., followed by a reception at 7 p.m.

Robots Invade West Broward High School For Mission Mayhem
Robots from around Florida will invade West Broward High School on Saturday, October 27, 2012, to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition – Mission Mayhem. West Broward High will host the Rebound Rumble competition from 8:30 a.m.– 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. West Broward High School is located at 500 NW 209th Avenue, Pembroke Pines.

Broward Continues Making Strides Toward Fixing Bus Fiasco
Broward school officials say they are making steady progress to mend the transportation mess that marred the start of the school year. Jeffrey Moquin, who oversees the transportation department, said the district has hired 64 drivers since school started and will continue recruiting. The first couple weeks of school were plagued by a disastrous bus service that left students stranded and parents outraged. Drivers arrived late to pick up children or failed to show up at all. District officials attributed the problem to a shortage of drivers.
