Grant boosts school's environmental efforts
A Weston school's environmental program has gotten a big boost. Country Isles Elementary School'sPTA recently received a $54,780 grant for its environmental education enrichment program from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. It was one of 68 to receive funding for service learning projects in the U.S. and Canada. The money will go toward a new science lab and a garden space for third-graders.

Nonprofit gets $100K to help high school students
The Firewall Centers in Davie is getting a big boost to its efforts. It recently received $100,000 for its high school outreach program from the AT&T Aspire High School Educational Foundation. The money will be used for the nonprofit's THINK (Take charge, Have a plan, Involve the right people, Never quit, Keep giving back) program over the next two years. The program helps students raise their grades and prepares them for college or a career….Indian Ridge Middle School Principal Frank Zagari said his students have improved with the help of Firewall Centers.

Students take part in e-field trip to 1800 election
Sebastian Rolando and his classmates recently got to experience parts of Colonial Williamsburg without ever leaving the library at their Pembroke Pines school. Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Pembroke Lakes Elementary School were part of a national electronic field trip hosted by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. As part of a live webcast, schools from California, Oklahoma, New Jersey and more watched actors perform dramatizations regarding the presidential election of 1800.

A Miramar elementary school designed to showcase U.S. history is being criticized for its display of the Confederate flag. Sunset Lakes Elementary School in Miramar is not your typical school — opened 10 years ago with a “U.S.History” theme, just about every hallway is emblazoned with historical murals, artifacts, or flags.
