BROWARD WINS CLEAN AIR EXCELLENCE AWARD
Broward County was awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2012 Clean Air Excellence Award for Education/Outreach for the Conservation and Climate Change (C3) Challenge for schools program at a ceremony September 19. The Clean Air Excellence Awards recognize innovative programs that protect Americans’ health and the environment, educate the public, serve their communities and stimulate the economy.

BROWARD SCHOOLS: SOME IN EAST GAIN STUDENTS; WEST SEES DROP
Call it this year's new math.  Some of Broward County's eastern schools are gaining students after years of losses. And booming western schools, including those in Tamarac,Miramar,Margate and PembrokePines, are losing many of their students to charter schools, according to the district's 20-day enrollment count. "I'm sad to see any schools lose students, but that's great news for the schools in the east," said School Board member Katie Leach of FortLauderdale."Those are the schools that are most underenrolled."

SUSTAINING, ‘SCALING UP’ EFFECTIVE PRACTICES OF URBAN HIGH SCHOOLS FOCUS OF RESEARCH
The National Center on Scaling Up EffectiveSchools at Vanderbilt University’s PeabodyCollege announced today the next phase of their partnership with Broward County Public Schools to study and “scale up” effective practices of these Florida high schools.

FLORIDA SAT SCORES LAG U.S. AVERAGES
In Miami-Dade and Florida as a whole, SAT scores are rising, though they still fall short of national averages. Florida’s SAT scores are inching upward — and more minority students are taking the exam — but the state continues to lag behind national averages, according to Class of 2012 results released on Monday. Florida’s average scores in the reading, mathematics and writing portions of the SAT were 492, 492, and 476, respectively. The national averages for those three categories are 496, 514, and 488.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

As you a registered volunteer? Are you available November 7, 2012 from 8:00am to 1:00pm? 5th grade is looking for volunteers to help out at BizTown. This is a field trip where 5th graders learn different skills in a work place. It's a mock town that consist of several businesses that teach the children how they all interact together. They will have a mayor, FPL, Waste Management, Channel 10, Sun-Sentinel, Bank Atlantic to name a few. If you are interested please contact Ms. Ryals at 754-322-8600 as soon as possible.

Tuesday, September 25: BAT I Testing for 5th grade only Science.

Friday, September 28: Interim Reports issued.

DAIRY QUEEN FAMILY NIGHT

Do you love ice cream? Would your child like to see their teacher serve food? Come visit us at Dairy Queen in Tamarac located at 7105 North Pine Island Road on Thursday September 20, 2012. We will be there from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. 15% of all sales will come back to Tamarac Elementary PTA to help fund our many programs at Tamarac Elementary School. Don't forget to bring in your coloring sheets. We look forward to seeing you there.

SCHOOL PHOTO DATES CHANGED

Due to the change in the BAT I Testing schedule Tamarac Elementary School has rescheduled individual school photos for October 8th & 9th. Look for information coming home with your child soon. If you would like to volunteer during school photos please send us an email at tamaracpta@aol.com or send in a note to your child's teacher. Make sure you have gone to the volunteer website, completed the application and received your volunteer badge.

OUTSTANDING OBLIGATIONS

Does your child have an outstanding obligation at Tamarac Elementary School? This obligation must be paid before you can pay for a field trip online. If you have any questions or concerns regarding outstanding obligations, contact your child's teacher or the front office at 754-322-8600.

Ms. Ryals Gets A Surprise Visit

 

Did you see news vehicles around the school? Did your children come home saying, "Our school was on TV."? Well they are right. Ms. Ryals, our 5th grade gifted teacher got a surprise visit Monday morning in her classroom as Superintendent Robert Runcie arrived in her classroom with flowers and great news. She has been named one of 6 Finalist for the 2012 President's Science Teacher Award. We are so proud of you Ms. Ryals.

OPEN HOUSE 3rd-5th GRADE REMINDER

Parents come out and meet your child's teacher. Learn what is happening in their classroom from Math, Reading, Science, etc. You have questions and they will give you the answers. Learn about all the resources out there to help your child when needed. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Please make sure your student turns in their yellow emergency card. It is for the safety of your child that the school has one on file in case of an emergency.
