POLAR EXPRESS

As the students walked through the halls of Tamarac today, they seen areas of railroad tracks in Kindergarten, golden tickets being issued and hot chocolate with candy canes given to each student. That's right Tamarac Elementary to a ride on the Polar Express. Everyone was encouraged to dress down and wear their festive holiday pajamas. This annual event is enjoyed by all. This year the classes were even treated to a little caroling by support staff and several of our teacher assistants. Photos will be posted soon in the photo album. Ask your child what the best part of their day was. We were glad to see so many smiling faces enjoying the holiday cheer. Ramblewood Middle a picture of arts success
It's not officially called RamblewoodMiddle School of the Arts, but it might as well be. As art programs in South Florida have faced cuts in recent years, the CoralSprings school has made it a top priority. Murals decorate the hallways and cafeteria, and 3-D renderings and decorative poster boards line the library. Students regularly rack up awards and honors. Ramblewood's success has even prompted the school to develop a proposal to eventually house an arts magnet program for students around the county.

Broward kids shine at donating shoes
One pair of shoes can make a very big impression.  And that's something students in Broward and Miami-Dade counties understood when they donated more than 2,300 new and used sneakers last month. The donations were part of the Orange Bowl's Kicks for Kids campaign that partnered with area schools to give underprivileged kids proper fitting sneakers so they could exercise.  Sunset Lakes Elementary School in Miramar and McArthurHigh School in Hollywood collected the greatest number and will each get a $2,500 grant.

The School Board of Broward County, FL employs school security personnel at various levels including police officers, school-based security specialists and school-based campus monitors. The School Board does contract with the Broward Sheriff’s Office and municipalities to provide School Resource Officers (SROs) who are assigned to Broward District Schools.  SROs are police officers and deputy sheriffs; they are armed and trained as any other police officer.

Hollywood Teacher Accused of Strapping Autistic Child into Chair: Report
Superintendent Robert Runcie has recommended the teacher be fired, but the teacher has the right to a state hearing.  A teacher at Stirling Elementary in Hollywood is accused of locking an autistic child in a chair for two hours, and improperly managing several other special-needs children, according to a complaint. Tuesday, the Broward School Board moved to suspend eight-year teacher Vivia Bromfield without pay, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

'Nutcracker' gets great grades from students
Hours before opening night of The Nutcracker, Miami City Ballet held its final dress rehearsal for a sea of young– but tough – critics: about 1,800 students. "I give them an A-," said fifth-grader Jindry Hernandez, a student at Bennett Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale. Hernandez, 12, is a dancer herself, and said she was looking for how well the ballerinas maintained their balance and posture. She joined students from around the county who packed the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale Friday to watch a special presentation of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker.

Middle School to be flushed out Saturday
Parents are concerned after someone at a South Florida middle school contracted a case of the potentially deadly Legionnaires' disease. Broward County Public School has not provided any information regarding the Legionnaires' disease outbreak. The only information that has been provided is from the parents of students at Olsen Middle School, who have spoken to the administration at the Broward County School Board, Wednesday.

Special-needs students find healing through art therapy
Jane Laun remembers getting a phone call almost every day from her son’s school, urging her to come get her child because he had had another meltdown. Her son, Justin, isautistic. “I was causing all these troubles,” said 15-year-old Justin, who now attends Sunset School Center in Fort Lauderdale, that works strictly with special-needs students. “I would go home early… I was causing too much damage.”

Dillard High may expand to K-12; 4 schools face drastic changes
DillardHigh School may house middle school students next year under a proposal that could be the first step toward creating a countywide K-12 digital arts magnet school. The underenrolled FortLauderdale school would get most of its middle school students from nearby Arthur Ashe Middle, one of four failing Broward schools that will likely be closed or dramatically changed under a plan to meet state accountability standards.

Dillard High, four other schools, could be overhauled
Dramatic changes could be coming to Broward County schools, including a major expansion of focus for Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale.  A proposal to turn Dillard into a K-12 digital arts and entertainment magnet school was mentioned almost as an afterthought in a discussion to improve four other schools.

Teacher at Olsen Middle School allegedly diagnosed with Legionnaire's Disease Broward County Public Schools and the county Health Department announced Tuesday that a male teacher at Olsen Middle School in Dania Beach had apparently contracted Legionnaires' Disease.  There were no reports of any students coming down with the form of pneumonia. Still, some parents who attended the school's annual Christmas concert Tuesday night told Local 10's Baron James that the district waited too long to notify them.

COVENTRY RECESS EXTRAVAGANZA

Last school year School Board Member Ms. Donna Korn approached Tamarac Elementary PTA about the Coventry Play for Better Health Day Grant. As we are a land locked school and have very limited play areas for our students Tamarac Elementary PTA took this opportunity to apply for this grant in hopes to add more play areas for our students. In April 2012 we were given the great news that Tamarac Elementary School was awarded the 2012 Play for Better Health Day Grant. With the help of the school board project team, Mrs. Ray and Coach Boegler we were able to come up with several areas of the school to turn into new play areas for all of our students to use. We were able to obtain enough funding to paint play court areas in 4 sections of the school, install a couple tetherball courts and recess equipment for each classroom. We are pleased to announce this event will be completed and ready for our Recess Extravaganza on Friday December 14, 2012 during each students specials time. Coventry will be hosting a small ceremony from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Broward gives final nod to teacher raises

The school board Tuesday unanimously approved the agreement between the district and the Broward Teachers Union that starting in January would hike wages based on experience. The increases will average 2 percent, plus one-time bonuses based on years of service, at a total cost of $12 million. The new salaries will range from about $39,000 to $71,000.

School project aims to make the world a better place
A three-day project at Pembroke Pines Charter High School culminated with a canned food drive and game event inspired by "The Hunger Games." The Thanksgiving week effort is the third school-wide project behind a specific theme, said social sciences teacher William Quigley. In 2011, the school had an event themed around the 10th anniversary of 9-11. Last spring, there was an event with the theme of life after graduation.

The departure of Chief Facilities and Construction Officer Tom Lindner on Tuesday signals a move to reform how the district spends construction funds. Broward schools chief seeks 50 new buses, GPS technology
Broward schools may soon buy 50 new school buses and a GPS system in an effort to modernize a transportation department under heavy scrutiny after thousands of students were left stranded at the beginning of the year. Five Broward Schools to grow their own healthy food

Students return to high school after precautionary evacuation
Students at Piper High School in Sunrise spent the lunch hour outside Friday after being temporarily evacuated from their classrooms. The students were sent outdoors as a precaution late Friday morning because of the smell of gas near one of the campus buildings, according to Nadine Drew, a spokeswoman for Broward Public Schools. Students were allowed to return to their classes shortly before 1:15 p.m. Units from Sunrise Fire Rescue and the gas company that serves the school were at the school at 8000 NW 44th Street to investigate the source of the smell. There were no reports of injuries.

Broward school bus supervisor gets thousands in bonuses, despite problems
A school district employee’s salary grew by more than $41,000 through ‘pay adjustments,’ but the district says he earned the money by assuming additional responsibilities. A mid-level supervisor in Broward Schools’ troubled transportation department reaped more than $41,000 in salary bonuses during the last six months — money that continued to flow even as the school system’s bus service got off to a disastrous start this school year, records show.  Transportation supervisor Vince Harrell, the employee who received the bonuses, did not respond to a call seeking comment Friday, and the school system’s top administrative brass, including Superintendent Robert Runcie, did not make themselves available for comment.

New Broward School Board members take office
For the first time in the Broward School Board’s history, all nine board members are women. With election season over, Broward’s new School Board will be sworn into office Tuesday morning. The 8:30 a.m. ceremony will take place at the Dillard Center for the Arts in Fort Lauderdale, 2501 NW 11th St.. Being sworn in are two new members, Abby Freedman and Rosalind Osgood, as well as four incumbents: Robin Bartleman, Patricia Good, Donna Korn, and Katherine Leach. For the first time in the Broward School Board’s history, all nine board members are women.  After the ceremony, the board will travel to school district headquarters for a 11:30 a.m. meeting focused on choosing a new School Board chairman, along with other organizational issues.

23 Western High School Students Visited Japan This Summer on the “Kizuna Project”
In Exchange, Western High School Will Host Students From Japan in the Spring 2013 Twenty-three students at Western High School in Davie, along with two of their teachers, visited Japan this summer as part of the Japanese Government’s youth exchange program – the “Kizuna (bond) Project.” The youth exchange project between Japan and the U.S. is aimed at promoting understanding and supporting Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The students participating in the tour are studying the Japanese language and culture at Western High, which offers one of the largest high school Japanese programs in the state of Florida.

21 Broward County School District Schools have been nominated for the $50,000 Clorox Power a Bright Future Grant.  There's a catch, though: the winner will be decided by vote.  This is a Nationwide contest.  So, here's your chance to support your hometown School.

TURKEY BOWL

PTA will be hosting our Annual Turkey Bowl. November 16, 2012 @ Sawgrass Lanes.
We will have 2 shifts this year. 4:30 to 6:30 and 7:00 to 9:00. 2 hours of bowling and shoe rental for $8.00 per person. Food will be available for purchase at the snack bar. Tickets will be sold the night of the event. Advance sales are available to guarantee a lane. Come out for a night of fun.
